The heart-rending vocals of seasoned soul veteran Bettye LaVette on the Who's "Love Reign O'er Me" were a highlight of the 2008 Kennedy Center Honors and the impetus for this album, which contains that performance as well as 12 more revelatory interpretations of classics from the canon of British rock. The content of the lyrics is brought dramatically to the foreground in LaVette's renditions of the Beatles' "The Word," Led Zeppelin's "All My Love," the Moody Blues's "Nights in White Satin," Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here," Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed," Ringo Starr's "It Don't Come Easy," George Harrison's "Isn't It a Pity?" Traffic's "No Time to Live," the Animals' "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," Derek and the Dominos' "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?" and Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me." To each tune she's appended the stamp of a unique artist who is 100 percent in command of her idiom.
