The versatile vocal legend Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau recorded this album of operatic rarities in 1969. Many of these delightful selections are either occasional arias or "insertion arias," written by Haydn and Mozart for performances of operas by others or for use in revised productions of their own works (e.g., "Hai già vinta la causa… Vedrò mentr'io sospiro" comes from from a 1789 revival of Le Nozze di Figaro). The languages and moods vary, and Fischer-Dieskau adapts (and sings) beautifully. "Of course the Figaro aria stands out … yet there's pleasure to be found in all, and in the very dramatic Così dunque tradisci a profundity of feeling that is not so vastly inferior to the Count's outburst. That, incidentally, is performed in the 1789 version, the high tessitura giving no trouble, any more than does the lowlying music written for Fischer, the original Osmin of Entfiihrung. Good recording, good accompaniments, an unusual programme, and a singer incapable of dullness: I found much to enjoy."—Gramophone
