Four strong performances elevate this 2008 screen adaptation of John Patrick Shanley's Pulitzer Prize– and Tony Award–winning play. Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, and Viola Davis each received Academy Award nominations, and Shanley's adaptation of his theater piece also won an Oscar nod. Streep plays Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the rigid principal of a Bronx Catholic school, whose conservative views are threatened by the arrival of the liberal Father Flynn (Hoffman), a harbinger of progressive 1960s reform. When Beauvier hears that Flynn has taken a special interest in a troubled male student, she draws the worst possible conclusion. But without proof, the only thing certain is doubt.
