This is the first LP featuring the Miles Davis Quintet—one of the most influential small bands of the 1950s. It also introduced John Coltrane to the jazz public. Davis's singular mastery with a Harman mute is evident, as is Red Garland's penchant for picking standards. Songs include "Just Squeeze Me," "How Am I to Know?" "There Is No Greater Love," "The Theme," and "Stablemates." "The story of these recordings has been retold many times in jazz literature. In the late summer of 1955, Davis recruited four mostly unknown musicians for his first working band (the 'First Great Quintet')…. The band's personas were glaringly dissimilar (Davis' tightly wound edginess, Coltrane's volatility, Garland's stylized symmetry), but they achieved a miraculous synergy."—Jazz Times
