A musician before he became an actor, Gary Busey sings live (and plays guitar) on all the Buddy Holly songs in this 1978 film, bringing a conviction and verisimilitude that makes this one of the all-time great musical biopics. Busey received an Oscar nomination for his uncanny performance, as did the technicians who helped recreate the authentic roller rink sound. The film's terrific sound track ("That'll Be the Day," "It's So Easy," "Peggy Sue," etc.) won the Academy Award for Best Score Adaptation. Don Stroud and Charles Martin Smith are equally convincing as Buddy's band, the Crickets.
