|
Renowned director Richard Brooks assembled an all-star cast for this gritty Western from 1966 that was nominated for three Oscars, including Best Director and Screenplay (Brooks) as well as for Conrad Hall's stirring cinematography. When a wealthy Texas oil baron's (Ralph Bellamy) wife (Claudia Cardinale) is kidnapped and spirited across the Mexican border by a band of mercenaries led by Jesus Raza (Jack Palance), he hires four soldiers of fortune to retrieve her. Each is an expert in his field: a marksman and tracker (Woody Strode), an explosives expert (Burt Lancaster), a horse handler (Robert Ryan), and a specialist in tactics and weaponry (Lee Marvin).
