Lawrence Kasdan's funny, tender adaptation of Anne Tyler's bestselling novel was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won best movie honors from the New York Film Critics Circle. The 1988 film stars William Hurt as Macon Leary, an emotionally stifled writer of travel books who separates from wife Kathleen Turner following their child's death. When his ex-son's Welsh corgi begins to misbehave, he hires a quirky dog trainer (Geena Davis, in an Oscar-winning performance) to teach it to behave. In the process, she teaches Macon how to reconnect with life.
