Given small budgets and lurid pre-tested film titles, producer Val Lewton worked with such rising filmmakers as Robert Wise to create relatively sophisticated works of psychological terror. In Cat People (1942), an American man (Kent Smith) marries a Serbian immigrant (Simone Simon), who fears that she will turn into the cat person of her homeland's fables if they are intimate together. Simon returns in The Curse of the Cat People, which marked four-time Oscar winner Wise's directorial debut. A gothic-laced mix of fantasy and horror, the 1944 film offered a study of a psychologically troubled child that was so astute that it reportedly was screened in college psych classes.
